A Kimono Walking Course from Osaka Castle to Minami — Starting & Ending at Kawaii Osaka in Soemoncho
kimono rental
Once you're dressed in your kimono at Kawaii Osaka (1-9 Soemoncho, Chuo-ku, Osaka), it's time to hit the road! This route takes you straight to Osaka Castle first, then loops back through Minami's best spots before returning to Soemoncho — a full loop course. It's about 4km in total, and with photo stops along the way, plan on 3 to 4 hours. Minami has so much to see that if you explore it first, your legs might be worn out by the time you reach Osaka Castle. That's why the winning strategy is to head straight for the castle while you're still fresh, then take it easy through Minami on the way back. Grab a fan and let's go!
This course is easy to complete in a single day with our Yukata Rental 1-Day Plan!

Let's Check Out Each Stop!
STOP.1 Osaka Castle Park & Main Tower
About a 30-minute walk from Kawaii Osaka
This is your first big destination! Osaka Castle, the symbol of the city. With the white-and-green tower against a blue sky, a kimono photo here is an absolute must. The park is packed with photo spots — the striking stone walls of Sakuramon Gate, the moat, and Nishinomaru Garden with its seasonal flowers. If you've still got energy, head up to the observation deck inside the tower for a sweeping view of Osaka. Tackle this one first, and the rest of the walk feels like a breeze!
You've made it to the halfway point! Being able to enjoy both Osaka Castle and Minami is exactly what the Yukata Rental 1-Day Plan makes possible.

STOP.2 Dotonbori
About a 40-minute walk from Osaka Castle
On your way back from Osaka Castle, you'll hit Minami — and the energy shifts! Snap a photo with the Glico sign behind you for an instantly iconic Osaka shot. The riverside promenade is paved with stone, so it's easy to walk even in a kimono, and you can relax and take photos without worrying about the crowds. If you're feeling peckish, grab some takoyaki to go before heading to the next stop!
STOP.3 Shinsaibashi Shopping Street
About a 5-minute walk from Dotonbori
Just a short walk from Dotonbori, Shinsaibashisuji is a covered arcade lined with everything from long-established shops to the latest trends — one of Osaka's liveliest shopping streets. Walking through in a kimono is bound to turn a few heads for all the right reasons. It's also a great spot to pick up souvenirs or take a sweet treat break.
STOP.4 Hozenji Yokocho
About a 10-minute walk from Shinsaibashi
With lanterns lining its stone-paved alley, Hozenji Yokocho is full of old-Osaka charm. Pour water over the moss-covered Fudo-son statue for a bit of good luck to close out your trip. The narrow lane makes for a beautiful backdrop for kimono photos, too. From here, Kawaii Osaka is just around the corner!
It's about a 3-minute walk from Hozenji Yokocho back to Kawaii Osaka. Return your kimono, and your loop course is complete! If you want to experience both Osaka Castle and Minami in one day, this route order is the way to go. Even if the walk to Osaka Castle sounds daunting, this course lets you enjoy kimono all day long with total peace of mind.
When's the Best Time to Start?
We recommend starting between 9 and 10 AM. Even in summer, it's relatively cool at this hour, and both Osaka Castle and Minami are still fairly quiet, making it easier to get great photos. You'll be back in Minami around lunchtime, so it's a great chance to grab lunch near Shinsaibashi or Dotonbori. Season-wise, cherry blossom season makes Nishinomaru Garden especially beautiful, while autumn brings gorgeous foliage along the moat that pairs perfectly with a kimono — either season is a great time to go!
3 Tips for Enjoying Your Kimono Walk
- If you're not used to walking in sandals, take it slow with small steps. Since this is a longer course, it helps to know a few cafés or shrines along the way where you can take a break. If you're worried about walking the whole route, you can always take the subway to skip the stretch between Osaka Castle and Minami!
- In summer, bring a parasol, a handheld fan, or cooling wipes. A bit of anti-wrinkle spray can also help keep your kimono looking sharp once you're back in Minami.
- Watch your step on slopes and uneven ground — Osaka Castle Park has some hills and stone steps near the walls, so take care with your geta or sandals. Packing light in a small drawstring bag or crossbody bag also makes walking a lot easier.
The grandeur of Osaka Castle, and then the energy of Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, and Hozenji Yokocho — experiencing such different sides of Osaka in a single route is only possible on foot, at a relaxed kimono pace. Your photos — and your memories — will be so much richer than an ordinary sightseeing trip!
