Summer Festivals Near Namba 2026: Dates, Locations & August Events

kimono rental Summer Festivals Near Namba 2026: Dates, Locations & August Events

If you are staying in Namba or Dotonbori and want to experience a Japanese summer festival in 2026, check the date before choosing where to go. Many of Osaka's major July festivals have already finished, but there are still events you can enjoy in August.

As of August 7, 2026, Dotonbori Bon Odori International is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, while the Dotombori Lantern Festival continues through Monday, August 31. Both take place in the Dotonbori area, making them easy to combine with sightseeing, dinner and an evening walk around Namba.

If fireworks are your priority, SBI Mai Hanabi in Sennan is scheduled for Saturday, August 22. It is not near Namba, but Nankai Namba Station is a practical starting point for the train journey south.

A yukata is a lightweight, casual summer kimono commonly worn at festivals in Japan. Kawaii Osaka is located at 1-9 Soemoncho, Chuo-ku, Osaka, near Dotonbori, so you can choose a yukata before heading to nearby summer events.

2026 Summer Festivals Near Namba at a Glance

Information checked: August 7, 2026

Saturday, August 8, 2026 — Dotonbori Bon Odori International: full event from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with public Bon Odori from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Admission is free and festival reservations are not required.

July 1 to August 31, 2026 — Dotombori Lantern Festival: lanterns are illuminated from 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM along the Tombori Riverwalk. Admission is free.

Saturday, August 22, 2026 — SBI Mai Hanabi in Sennan: fireworks are scheduled to begin at 7:15 PM. This is a paid event and requires a longer journey from Namba.

・The major July festivals around Namba and central Osaka described later in this guide have already finished for 2026.

Event schedules can change because of weather or operational conditions. Confirm the current event status before leaving your hotel or changing into a yukata.

Choose the Summer Event That Fits Your Osaka Plans

You do not need to choose the largest or most famous festival. Start with the experience you want, then check the date, distance and finish time.

Choose Dotonbori Bon Odori if you want to join the festival

Dotonbori Bon Odori International is the strongest choice if you want to participate rather than only watch.

Bon Odori is a communal summer dance associated with Japan's Obon season. You do not need to know the choreography before arriving because first-time visitors can follow the dancers around them.

The event takes place on Saturday, August 8, 2026. The daytime program runs from 12:00 PM, while the public Bon Odori is scheduled from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM along the Tonbori Riverwalk below Ebisubashi Bridge.

Admission: Free

Reservation: Not required for the festival

Nearest stations: Namba, Osaka-Namba, Nippombashi and Kintetsu-Nippombashi

No official festival food stalls are currently listed, so do not plan your evening on the assumption that yatai will be available. Yatai are temporary Japanese festival stalls selling food, drinks or games.

You can instead eat in Dotonbori before or after joining the dance.

Read the Dotonbori Bon Odori 2026 Guide

Choose the Dotombori Lantern Festival for a flexible evening walk

The Dotombori Lantern Festival works better when you do not want to arrive at one fixed starting time.

Nearly 2,000 lanterns illuminate both sides of the Tombori Riverwalk from 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM. The 2026 display is scheduled from July 1 to August 31 and is free to view.

The riverwalk is approximately a five-minute walk from Osaka Metro Namba Station Exit 4 according to the current event information.

This is especially easy to combine with dinner, Dotonbori sightseeing or photographs in a yukata because you can choose your own arrival time within the illumination hours.

The lantern display is not the same event as the Namba Yasaka Shrine Funatogyo boat procession. The shrine's 2026 boat procession took place in July, while the lantern display continues through the end of August.

Choose SBI Mai Hanabi if fireworks are your priority after August 7

SBI Mai Hanabi is the stronger option if you specifically want a large fireworks event later in August.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2026 at SENNAN LONG PARK, with fireworks beginning at 7:15 PM.

This is not a festival you can simply walk to from Dotonbori. The practical rail journey starts from Nankai Namba Station and continues toward Tarui Station, followed by a walk to the venue.

The viewing areas are paid, so check your ticket, entrance time and current train information before leaving Namba.

Major July Festivals Near Namba Have Already Finished for 2026

Several important summer festivals took place around Namba and central Osaka in July. They are useful for understanding Osaka's festival season, but do not travel to them expecting the 2026 events to still be running.

Osaka Minami Summer Festival & Nigiwai Square

The 2026 Osaka Minami Summer Festival & Nigiwai Square was held at Namba Square on Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12.

The first day ran from 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM, and the second from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Evening summer dancing was scheduled from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on both days.

Because the venue is directly in the Namba area, this was one of the easiest 2026 summer events to combine with shopping and sightseeing.

The 2026 event has now finished.

Ikukunitama Festival

Ikukunitama Festival was held on July 11 and 12, 2026 at Ikukunitama Shrine.

The festival included shrine ceremonies, processions, performances and festival stalls. Tanimachi 9-chome Station is the closest Osaka Metro station, so this required a short train journey rather than a Dotonbori-only walking plan.

The 2026 festival has finished.

Namba Yasaka Shrine Summer Festival

Namba Yasaka Shrine held its summer festival on July 13 and 14, 2026.

One of its distinctive events is Funatogyo, a boat procession on the Dotonbori River. The 2026 procession was scheduled on July 13 from approximately 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM between Hiyoshibashi and Nipponbashi.

This boat procession should not be confused with the month-long Dotombori Lantern Festival.

The 2026 Namba Yasaka Shrine Summer Festival has finished.

Tamatsukuri Inari Shrine Summer Festival

Tamatsukuri Inari Shrine held its summer festival on July 15 and 16, 2026.

The program included shrine activities, festival stalls, a children's mikoshi procession and local performances. A mikoshi is a portable shrine carried during Japanese festivals.

Tamatsukuri is outside the immediate Namba and Dotonbori walking area, so using the train is more practical than treating it as part of a short Namba walk, especially in summer weather.

The 2026 event has finished.

Tenjin Matsuri

Tenjin Matsuri was held on Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25, 2026 around Osaka Tenmangu Shrine and the Okawa River.

July 25 featured the main land and boat processions, with fireworks generally scheduled from 7:30 PM to 8:50 PM.

This is a much larger festival experience than the events directly around Dotonbori, and travel time, crowds and viewing locations require more planning.

See the Full Tenjin Matsuri 2026 Guide

Choose Your Yukata Plan Around the Festival Finish Time

The most important difference between yukata plans is not simply the price. Check how long you want to stay outside and when the rental must be returned.

For a short walk around Dotonbori

The current adult 90-minute yukata rental is listed from ¥4,400.

This option works better when your main goal is a short yukata experience, photographs and a walk around nearby Dotonbori rather than spending an entire evening at a festival.

Allow enough time to return within the conditions of the plan.

For daytime sightseeing and an earlier return

The current adult one-day yukata plan is listed from ¥5,500.

The current plan information states a 9:00 PM return time. That works for daytime sightseeing and many evening plans, but it creates a timing problem when the event itself continues until 9:00 PM.

For example, Dotonbori Bon Odori is scheduled to finish at 9:00 PM. Using a same-day plan would mean allowing time to leave the event and return the yukata before the deadline.

For an event that continues late into the evening

The Osaka Fireworks & Festival Yukata Plan is currently listed from ¥12,100 and includes next-day return.

This removes the need to rush back during the final part of an evening festival. It can be particularly useful when the event ends around 9:00 PM or when you need additional travel time after leaving the venue.

Plans, prices and availability can change, so confirm the current conditions before booking.

Prepare for Walking, Crowds and Summer Weather

A festival route can take longer than the same journey on an ordinary sightseeing day. Allow extra time around busy stations, riverwalk entrances and major event areas.

If you wear geta or other traditional sandals, keep the walking distance in mind. Geta are traditional Japanese wooden sandals often associated with yukata, and they can feel different from the shoes you normally use for sightseeing.

Bring water and allow time for indoor breaks before a long outdoor evening. Namba and Dotonbori have many restaurants, shopping facilities and indoor spaces that can be useful before entering a crowded festival area.

Do not assume every festival has the same food setup. Some shrine festivals have rows of temporary yatai, while the current information for Dotonbori Bon Odori does not list official festival stalls.

Check before you go:

・The event date and current operating status

・The starting and finishing times

・Whether admission or a ticket is required

・Your yukata return deadline

・The correct Namba station for your route

・The weather and any event cancellation announcement

・How much walking you will need to do after the event

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there still summer festivals near Namba in August 2026?

Yes.

As of August 7, 2026, Dotonbori Bon Odori International is scheduled for August 8, and the Dotombori Lantern Festival continues through August 31.

For fireworks, SBI Mai Hanabi on August 22 is another option, although it requires a longer trip from Namba to Sennan.

Can international visitors join Dotonbori Bon Odori?

Yes.

The public Bon Odori is open to visitors, advance festival registration is not required and first-time participants can follow the people dancing around them.

You can also choose to watch instead of joining.

Is the Dotonbori Lantern Festival the same as the Namba Yasaka boat procession?

No.

The Dotombori Lantern Festival is the summer illumination along the Tombori Riverwalk and continues from July 1 through August 31 in 2026.

The Namba Yasaka Shrine Funatogyo is a separate boat procession connected to the shrine's July summer festival.

Do all Osaka summer festivals require tickets?

No.

Dotonbori Bon Odori and the Dotombori Lantern Festival are free to enjoy according to the current information.

SBI Mai Hanabi uses paid viewing areas, so check the relevant ticket conditions before travelling to Sennan.

Is a 90-minute yukata rental enough for a summer festival?

Not always.

A 90-minute plan can work for a short Dotonbori walk or photographs, but it is not designed for spending several hours at an evening festival.

Choose the plan after checking the event schedule and rental return conditions.

Plan Your 2026 Summer Festival Night from Namba

Namba is a useful base because you can choose between events directly around Dotonbori and larger festivals reached by train.

For the easiest participatory experience, Dotonbori Bon Odori lets you join the dance beside the river. For a flexible evening without a fixed start time, the Dotombori Lantern Festival lets you walk through the illuminated river area at your own pace.

If you are planning around a yukata, check the festival finish time before choosing the rental plan. A short rental, same-day return and next-day return each suit a different type of evening.

Kawaii Osaka is located at 1-9 Soemoncho, Chuo-ku, Osaka, making Dotonbori easy to combine with a yukata experience without adding a long journey before the event.

Check the latest event information, weather and rental conditions before you leave, then choose the festival that fits the way you want to spend your Osaka summer night.
